Why Sculpt?

Why do people sculpt? I often get asked this question. There are many answers, but some of the most significant reasons for sculpting may surprise you and are universally true for everyone, regardless of background or training,

When you sculpt, you do not work in an analogous manner, meaning you don't interpret a version of what you are seeing in a flat 2D medium. Instead you create an actual physical object in 3D space, right before you. This connection between what you see, and what you are creating with your own hands is transformative.

To Sculpt, Learn to See

Because of modern day disconnections with making things ourselves, in general, we develop the tendency to look but not to "see.” We are often overwhelmed with too much information and not enough time to process it. Sculpting reorients you in the act of seeing and translating what you see into an object you study and connect with over a focused period of time. The results are palpable. Many things you took for granted, in understanding how things are shaped, will be challenged and your preconceptions will peel away, to see things as they are.

My programs are oriented around results. Anyone can create a visually rewarding and complete sculpture, no matter what experience level you started with. This is possible because what I teach is not a series of skills, that might take years to perfect, but rather I teach you how to see. Once you can see, you can self train, quickly self edit and have creative epiphanies. From earliest childhood, everyone is born with the ability to create. Over time, as schoolchildren, you are forced to see conventionally, circles for heads, cylinders for arms, etc... You are told how things appear according to convention, but not as they really are. What I do is reset that negative conventional training, and restore your innate natural ability to actually see. No art practice is better for restoring that ability than sculpting, and the benefits you gain, are applicable to every walk of life, not just art. Thinking creatively and seeing originally are transformative, powerful tools for any profession or a stage of life.
